“NFL Back-up Quarterbacks have Little Potential as “Real” Stars” …I’m Pieved!

I’m pieved!  I had a conversation this evening with my brother …a die-hard Redskin fan.  He’s a bit disgruntled that his Skins won’t be able to draft Matt Barkley since Barkley announced earlier today that he would stay at USC and complete his senior year.

I recommended the Redskins might be better off trying to sign Matt Flynn as a free agent.

Flynn has some solid professional experience under the tutelage of Packer coach Mike McCarthy and Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rogers.

He didn’t want to hear that!  He seems committed to his belief that a truly successful NFL quarterback can only be a quarterback that is drafted and “steps into the fire” immediately.

What do you think????

  1. What I said was…in today’s ‘win-now’, QB-centric NFL, teams are more inclined to draft pre-developed QBs who can quickly step in and play at a high level.

If you look at the 32 starting QBs in today’s NFL, all the top-tier QBs support this strategy. Brady, the Manning brothers, Brees, Roethlisberger…and one could agrue Rodgers would have started sooner had he not had to wait for the diva Favre to retire.

Regarding Matt Flynn, I fail to see how anyone can say with any reasonable certainty that a guy who has held a clip board for 4 years…has started ONLY 1 game…and has thrown a total of 88 passes @ 58% completion rate @ an average of 6.1 yrds…is a better choice than some of the blue-chip college QBs (Luck, Barkley and RGIII).

Rick I love your Pack loyalty and I’m sorry if you’re pieved (not really), but you’ve clearly drank the green kool-aid if you think that just because Flynn has done what ARodg did previously, he can also be a great starting QB. Put down the bottle and accept him for what he is….a solid, reliable backup QB that if called upon to play due to injury, will execute and manage an offense effectively while minimizing TOs.
